The Cuba Libre got its name from the battle–cry of the freedom fighters during the Revolutionary War, which ended in 1898, in the country where it is said to have been invented around 1900–2.
Bacardi and Coke, or any Rum and Coke, is pretty much a Cuba Libre (lacking only the lime juice). So much so that if you search for "Cuba libre" in Wikipedia, it redirects you to Rum and Coke.
